'Enduring a Horrific Ordeal': Relatives of Missing Teenagers Desperately Seek Answers After Alpine Blaze
The loved ones of young people unaccounted for after a tragic fire at a venue in a Switzerland's alpine town are facing an excruciating period of uncertainty for answers and pleading for any details about their children online.
The fire devastated the Le Constellation bar in Cans-Montana, located in the Alps of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of January 1st. Circulated footage reveal the roof structure catching alight as beverages with fireworks are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have warned that it could take days if not weeks to formally name the those who perished of the fire, which claimed the lives of 40 people and hurt another 119. A spokesperson noted on Friday that 113 of the those hurt have been identified, with the process still underway to name the remaining few.
In the meantime, families and friends have been using the internet to request clues about their friends who were present at the venue that fateful night.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Missing
The location of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, a teenager, are currently unknown, according to an heartfelt request from his mother.
The who lives of Lutry near the city, explained to a local newspaper that she had returned to the city to see if he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the same in the capital, but was unsuccessful.
"It feels like a terrible dream, a nightmare. Either I find my son in the hospital mortuary, or I find him in a serious state. It's horrific," she told the paper.
She continued that some of his peers had been discovered with injuries covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they endured a terrifying ordeal."
The Italy's government has said that six of its nationals are still unaccounted for.
Among them is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage sportsman, originally from Genoa but now residing in the UAE.
The Italian Golf Federation has released a tribute that he is dead, without mentioning the fire, honoring a "young athlete who represented dedication and true sportsmanship."
His parent, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last heard from around the new year. An representative has indicated that a official announcement of his death is still pending.
Additional Cases
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is also among the missing. His parent told reporters that he had been on holiday but had gone out with friends and ended up at the venue.
"A close friend said they ran away after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a certain point he they were separated," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a distinctive piece of jewelry.
One of his educators stated, "I've always been struck by his kindness and smile, coupled with great maturity. Often offer to get me a coffee."
Alice Kallergis, who holds both Greek and Swiss citizenship but lives permanently in Switzerland, was also at the bar on that night, according to reports.
Her sibling has published an urgent request online, saying the family has had "no updates" regarding the 15-year-old or the group she was with, who are also unaccounted for.
Consular authorities from her other nation say they are actively engaged with the situation.
